In 1998, Mr Rees passed his FRCS examinations before commencing his Specialist Registrar training in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery at the internationally renowned Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in Stanmore, Middlesex.
In 2005, Mr Rees passed the FRCS(Tr & Orth) examination, was awarded his ‘Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training’ in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery and was granted Specialist Recognition by the GMC. In 2006, Mr Rees was appointed Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in knee surgery at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, Essex.
Oxinium knee replacement
Mr Rees is among the few surgeons in the UK currently offering knee replacement surgery using an implant made of Oxinium, an alloy of zirconium that forms a ceramic surface when it is oxidised, while retaining a metal core. Combining the properties of an exceptionally friction-free surface with strength, in tests Oxinium has shown an 85% decrease in the wear of the polythene spacer when compared to cobalt chrome, greatly increasing longevity and making it a suitable option for patients under 65 years of age.
Hip replacement
Although his private practice focuses predominantly on the treatment of knee disorders, Mr Rees is also skilled in hip replacement surgery, having received specialist training while working on the Joint Reconstruction Unit at the RNOH. Carrying out between 60 and 80 total hip replacements a year, he is one of the main hip replacement surgeons at Broomfield Hospital and offers a comprehensive range of modern techniques and prostheses, including cobalt, chrome and ceramic femoral heads; cemented, cementless and hybrid procedures; and minimally invasive hip surgery.
