Zoe Winters: Consultant Breast Cancer Surgeon and Breast Specialist in Surrey
Based at New Victoria Hospital in Kingston Upon Thames, Professor Zoe Winters is a nationally and internationally recognised Consultant Breast Surgeon specialising in the diagnosis, treatment and management of breast cancer and benign breast problems.
Training and experience
Professor Zoe Winters undertook her medical and surgical training in Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa and completed her Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Oxford as a Nuffield Senior Research Fellow. She was made a Professor of Breast Surgery though University College London in 2017 and currently practices at Kingston and Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.
In a career spanning over 30 years, Professor Winters has been the recipient of many awards and honours, including the Pfizer Excellence in Oncology award, the Surgical Club of South West England Travelling Fellowship in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery at the Marie Curie Institute in Paris and the King James IV Professorship for excellence in surgical research from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In 2019 she was awarded the iWantGreatCare certificate of excellence for delivering outstanding care.
A recognised expert in her field, Professor Winters is on numerous national and international committees and is regularly invited to lecture around the world. She has supervised and been the examiner for large numbers of PhD, MSc and MD students in the field of breast cancer.
Clinical interests
Professor Winters has a clinical interest in breast cancer and benign breast problems in both men and women, oncoplastic approaches to breast cancer surgery with immediate breast reconstruction after mastectomy, use of sentinel node biopsy techniques, family history breast cancer risk assessment and advice, and breast contour re-sculpturing using fat filling including breast reduction and breast augmentation.
Professor Winters performs all types of breast cancer surgery using the latest oncoplastic techniques and is regarded as an expert on immediate breast reconstruction. She is highly focused on providing patients with excellent outcomes with regard to both surgery and Quality of Life in order to deliver the best personalised care. All breast cancer treatment is planned as part of an experienced multi-disciplinary team and Professor Winters collaborates with expert plastic surgeons where more complex micro-vascular techniques are required.
Research interests
Professor Winters has a special interest in immediate breast reconstruction and is regularly invited to national and international meetings to share her research findings and clinical experience. In addition, she has led two novel clinical trials in the prevention of seromas after breast reconstruction and was the Chief Investigator on pioneering Cancer Research UK clinical trials investigating breast reconstruction.
