Mr Ewen Griffiths is Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Training and experience

Mr Ewen Griffiths qualified in medicine from Dundee University, Scotland in 2000 and achieved Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (Glasgow) in 2004. In 2006, he was awarded an MD from Manchester University for his work on ‘hypoxia associated factors’ in oesophagogastric cancer carried out at the Paterson Institute of Cancer Research, research that also led to many publications in leading medical journals.

Mr Griffiths undertook his higher surgical training in the North West of England, including Specialist Registrar posts in the Upper Gastrointestinal Units at Salford Royal Hospital and Royal Preston Hospital. He obtained his Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons in 2010 and completion of specialist surgical training (CCT) in 2012. He spent a year as a Senior Upper Gastrointestinal Fellow at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia where he received specialist training in the field of advanced laparoscopic surgery for reflux, giant hiatus hernias, upper GI cancer and obesity.

Mr Griffiths was appointed as a Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon at the University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation NHS Trust in September 2012.

Treatments

Mr Griffiths specialises in General Surgery (abdominal hernias, emergency surgery, lumps and bumps) and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery (reflux disease, hiatus hernia, gallbladder disease, oesophageal and gastric cancer and achalasia). He is skilled in both laparoscopic and open surgery, using keyhole techniques for the majority of abdominal surgeries, including large hernias.

A JAG accredited Upper GI Endoscopist, Mr Griffiths regularly performs both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. He sees patients with a variety of symptoms including:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Abdominal lumps, bumps and masses
  • Anaemia
  • Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
  • Indigestion
  • Jaundice
  • Reflux and heartburn
  • Vomiting and regurgitation
  • Weight loss

Specialist Upper GI and general surgery procedures

Mr Griffiths provides a range of specialist Upper GI and general surgery procedures:

  • Diagnostic Upper GI endoscopy
  • Therapeutic Upper GI endoscopy: biopsy and polypectomy, Barrett’s surveillance biopsies, oesophageal dilatation, oesophageal stent insertion, balloon dilatation for achalasia
  • Gallbladder surgery: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, including intra-operative cholangiography and Common Bile Duct (CBD) exploration
  • Anti-reflux surgery: laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery (fundoplication)
  • Hiatus hernia surgery: laparoscopic and open hiatus hernia repair
  • Achalasia treatment: balloon dilatation and Heller’s laparoscopic cardiomyotomy
  • Oesophago-gastric cancer surgery: Mr Griffiths’ outcome for this demanding and complex surgery is available in the NHS Consultant Outcomes website and is extremely good compared to the national average
  • Groin and abdominal hernia surgery: laparoscopic and open repair of inguinal and femoral hernias in the groin, and all other forms of abdominal hernia

Research interests

Mr Griffiths plays an active role in academic research and audit. He is a regular contributor to the academic literature, regularly publishing in peer reviewed medical journals on topics such as gallstones/cholecystectomy, oesophageal cancer, Barrett’s oesophagus, gastric cancer, oesophagogastric stents, upper gastrointestinal bleeding and achalasia, as well as topics relevant to general surgery.

Mr Griffiths is currently leading the CholeS study, a multicentre UK and Irish audit looking at the outcomes of cholecystectomy carried out with the West Midlands Research Collaboration.
