Simon Smith: Expert in treatment of breast lumps in Chelmsford
Based at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Mr Simon Smith is an Essex-based Consultant Breast and Endocrine Surgeon specialising in one-stop breast lump assessments and oncoplastic breast surgery (cancer, reconstruction and cosmetic breast surgery). He also has an extensive endocrine practice, undertaking thyroid surgery for thyroid cancer, and benign thyroid disease, as well as Parathyroid surgery, including minimally invasive parathyroidectomy for hypercalcaemia.
Mr Smith provides private one-stop assessments of breast lumps in Chelmsford, as well as breast and endocrine procedures. He practices at Ramsay Springfield Hospital and The Chelmsford Private Day Surgery Hospital.
Training and experience
Mr Smith qualified from St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington in 1993, and remained in and around West London for the majority of his postgraduate training. He is a fully accredited general surgeon, and won the Association of Surgeons Gold Medal for top position in the UK in the Intercollegiate Surgical Board Examinations in general and breast surgery.
Mr Smith trained in breast surgery at several breast units, including St. Mary’s, Hillingdon, Colchester and Chelmsford. Training in reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgery was gained at St. Mary’s, and subsequently on the National Oncoplastic Fellowship hosted at Colchester & St Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford.
Mr Smith underwent endocrine surgery training at St. Mary’s, London and as Senior Registrar at Hammersmith Hospital which, at the time, was the largest endocrine surgical centre in the UK.
Current practice
Additionally he is an endocrine surgeon managing a wide range of thyroid and parathyroid procedures for thyroid cancer, goitre, thyroid lumps and hypercalcaemia due to hyperparathyroidism.
He was Lead Cancer Clinician at Mid Essex Hospitals Trust from 2011 to 2016, and has in the past held the position of Asssociate Medical Director of the hospital (2011 – 2013).
In the private sector, Mr Smith works at Springfield Hospital in Chelmsford and at The Chelmsford Private Day Surgery Hospital.
Mr Smith runs a Private One Stop Breast Clinic for the assessment of breast lumps in Chelmsford. He also assesses pain, discharge, or other worrisome symptoms. This is held on Tuesday and Friday afternoon / evenings, and provides a ‘One Stop’ assessment, including clinical, mammography, ultrasound and biopsy if necessary. The Springfield Hospital clinic has no limits on capacity – Simon believes that ladies with breast lumps are usually very anxious, and all private pateints, either insured or self-pay, are welcome. This ensures anxious pateints do not have to wait the 2 weeks that is the standard in the NHS, but rarely wait more than 2 days for a full assessment at Springfield Private One Stop Breast Clinic.
Simon is currently Medical Director of the famous Harley Medical Group, a role that ensures the highest levels of patient safety and safe surgical practice amongst the many surgeons who work at Harley Medical.
Simon is on the GMC specialist register for General Surgery, revalidated in 2014 (next due in 2019) and his GMC number is 4034339. He seeks regular, open feedback through the I want great care website.

Breast reconstruction
Immediate and delayed breast reconstruction in association with mastectomy, or partial reconstruction following cosmetically unfavourable breast conserving surgery, can be a complex matter. Mr Smith's particular interests lie in improving the cosmetic outcome of oncological breast surgery.
When all the breast tissue or part of the breast tissue has been removed as part of breast cancer surgery, there are a number of ways that the breast can be reshaped. These techniques are based on using implants alone, remoulding a breast shape from existing body tissue or a combination of the two processes to recreate a breast similar in size and shape to the original. The other breast can also be modified to match, so there are no differences in symmetry and shape.
Methods to achieve this include skin sparing mastectomy, latissimus dorsi reconstruction, extended latissimus dorsi reconstruction, implant-based reconstruction, acellular dermal matrix, diep flap and tug flap (with microvascular surgeon) and therapeutic mammoplasty (breast reduction surgery for breast cancer treatment).
Whilst Mr Smith performs most of these techniques himself, he also has a close working relationship with the microvascular plastic surgeons at St Andrew’s, Broomfield, which allows a full range of techniques to be offered to patients, dependant on choice / suitability. This close multidisciplinary team offers patients access to the latest most advanced techniques where suitable and Mr Smith is able to advise on which technique would be most appropriate in each individual case.
Research interests
Mr Smith worked under Professor Ara Darzi for two years doing research into assessment, training and accreditation of technical skills in surgery, and was awarded a Master of Surgery Degree from the University of London for his research. He currently is very active in Breast Cancer Research at Broomfield Hospital, and is Principal Investigator in many NCRN approved trials.

I am 2 days post op and I am over the moon with my results. Mr Smith was fantastic, he made me feel at ease and the whole process was calm and relaxed. I can't thank Mr Smith enough for what he has done for me and the confidence that he has given me. I have had minimal pain and the scars are tiny. Overall I am one very happy customer. Once again thank you Simon.
