I had Artisan implants put in at the Spire Hospital, Leicester, in an attempt to improve my vision. I had originally intended to have the more common procedure of eye laser surgery, but had to revert to implants following the outcome of my initial consultatuion in which I was told my cornea were too thin. I had the option of going with laser surgery if I wanted, but was told it would cause problems later. Upon mature thought, I wondered whether I would have been told this or not at any other less reputable eye laser surgery establishment.
Artisan implants are more expensive than eye laser surgery, but the benefits of it are of equal value, if not more beneficial. The procedure, put simply, involves implanting a contact lens in front of the eye's natural lens, thereby enhancing the vision from inside the eye. It is therefore reversible at any time (where laser surgery isn't), and is less painful. My consultant went through all of the stages of the procedure and gave invaulable advice and reassurance as to it's success.
The surgery itself lasted for around 40 mins, and they kept me in until I awoke following General Anaesthesia. I kept an eye patch on overnight and had two sets of eye drops for each eye. They don't generally perform surgery on both eyes on the same day with implant surgery, so I went in twice. Both times were successful and I now enjoy a completely spectacle free life - until such a time that I'll need reading glasses, which even laser surgery cannot prevent. And the beauty of this reversible procedure is that if there ever comes a time where it is possible to combat the need for reading glasses as a result of age and the natural wearing of the eye's inherent lenses, I can look at the possibility of removing the current lenses and try the new procedure!
I was completely satisfied with the Spire's facilities, and staff. The hospital itself is clean and contains state of the art facilities in which to assess and operate on eyes. The only slight niggle was that sometimes appointment times were changed without my being told, but they fit me in when I got there as originally planned. My consultant was excellent and took the time to answer the raft of questions I had without looking at his watch too many times. The nurses were equally great and the care I received both during and after the surgery was also excellent.
I thoroughly recommend having corrective vision surgery and at the Spire Hospital, Leicester, but would insist that potential patients take the time to research not only the hospitals in which such surgery is performed, but also the consultants that operate there, as well as reviewing information on the differing procedures available on the market. It's also worth noting that marketing gimmicks on low pricing should not be the motivation in going with a particular company; instead, look at the worth and experience of the consultant as well as the facilities and aftercare the establishment has to offer. It is impossible to guarantee a successful operation, but a good consultant will be able to give you as much information as you need to reassure you of the options available. You only have one set of eyes so it's better to make an informed choice and go with a reputable company that may even be more expensive, than be sucked in by marketing ploys with operatives that don't really have as much experience. For the record, my procedure turned out to be cheaper than those companies that advertise widely, so it's all good!
