Lionel Byrne, an 85 year-old grandfather is planning to keep active and independent well into his twilight years thanks to advanced and pioneering new surgery to replace his damaged right knee. The new treatment, Signature knee, uses MRI imaging to create a 3D image of the patient’s knee. With this information the surgeon can carefully pre-plan the surgery and create a bespoke, patient matched knee replacement to replace their faulty joint. The patient matched instrumentation and ability to pre-plan the operation reduces the length of time spent in theatre to just 40 minutes compared with 60-90 minutes for a traditional procedure. Lionel, a former advertising executive who had the new treatment back in March 2011, is now fully recovered and singing the praises of the designer knee, consultant and staff at BMI Bishops Wood Hospital who have helped him “keep active”.
Before having the operation at Bishops Wood Hospital in March, the arthritis in Lionel’s knee was at a stage where he knew that if he put off the surgery any longer the pain would become unbearable and he would lose both his mobility and independence. Being an active, fit and determined man, mobility and independence wasn’t something Lionel was willing to sacrifice.
After the successful treatment on his left knee, Lionel decided to wait before undergoing another on his right, “The first operation allowed me to regain my mobility and I decided to wait before undergoing treatment on my right as the pain wasn’t too bad. Slowly however, the knee became worse and worse and I feared that if I didn’t get my right knee replaced It would just progressively get worse and leave me unable to walk.”
Lionel is now able to enjoy his retirement pain free and without the worry that either of his knees will let him down, he comments “I’ve led a life that is active and I’m not about to stop now. Thanks to Mr Houlihan-Burne and Bishops Wood Hospital I no longer fear becoming an armchair spectator in my own life – and I look forward to continuing an active life with both my family and fiends”.
