BMI orthopaedic surgeon recognised

Stephen Cannon, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at BMI The Clementine Churchill Hospital in Harrow, has been shortlisted for a prestigious 2011 Independent Healthcare Award for his work in the field of orthopaedic surgery.

The award nomination, in the 'Outstanding Contribution' category, recognises Mr Cannon’s contribution to lower and upper limb surgery, in which he specialises in knee and hip replacements, across a career spanning more than 35 years. Working alongside organisations, such as the Department of Bio-Medical Engineering at University College London, Mr Cannon has helped push forward the boundaries of prosthetic joint design to improve both the recovery times and mobility of orthopaedic patients across the UK. Special recognition for the nomination was also given to the achievements he has made with cancer patients who undergo surgery following a tumour in their bone, in many cases Mr Cannon has been able to successfully save a limb from being amputated. More recently his work has also focused on the field of arthroscopy, a form of keyhole surgery that allows joints to be treated and repaired without the need for major surgery.

“Being recognised in the Outstanding Contribution category at the Independent Healthcare Awards is a fantastic honour,” said Mr Cannon. “Joint surgery is an incredibly complex field and the progress that my peers and I have been able to make over the course of my career is astounding. My work with cancer patients has been particularly rewarding as it has allowed me to improve the outcomes for patients who have been through an incredibly traumatic period of their life. Being able to save a limb and help a patient retain their mobility is always extremely rewarding and I am deeply humbled that the achievements I have made are been deemed worthy of this nomination. I would like to thank my team and everyone at The Clementine Churchill Hospital who have worked alongside me during the course of my career and I hope to continue this relationship for many years to come.”

Mr Cannon was also recognised for his role in enhancing patient care at The Clementine Churchill Hospital by improving integrated working practices, training techniques and post-operative care. Speaking on what this award nomination means to the team at the hospital, Executive Director Jan Hale at The Clementine Churchill commented, “We are absolutely thrilled that Mr Cannon is being honoured for his lifetime of dedication to the field of lower and upper limb surgery. It’s a huge tribute to Stephen’s expertise in this area and acknowledges the pioneering work and excellent standards he provides at our hospital. I speak for all the team and consultants at The Clementine Churchill Hospital when I say that we are delighted to have him as part of our team and hope that he continues pushing forward the boundaries of orthopaedic surgery for many years to come.”

Mr Cannon will be honoured at The Independent Healthcare Awards Gala Dinner hosted by the writer, broadcaster and former Conservative MP Giles Brandreth on 20 September. Started in 2005, the awards are designed to celebrate and recognise the work, management and professional skills within the growing independent healthcare sector in the UK.
