Care system 'facing crisis'

The NHS care system in the UK is reaching crisis point, according to recent suggestions. Charity Age UK has claimed that the health service is failing to divert sufficient funds and focus to the over-65s, leaving the system "in crisis".

As a result of this, people with older family members or those approaching old age themselves may want to look into private healthcare options.

The comments from the charity follow a report commissioned by the BBC, which revealed out of the 324 local authorities in England, more than 40 expect at least half of their population will be aged-50 or over by 2029.

Spokeswoman for Care UK Sheila Roberts remarked that the main challenge facing health providers is to offer "quality care and access to care".

"Care staff need to be carefully chosen and trained to deliver a safe and compassionate service," she added.

Ros Altmann from Saga warned earlier this month that the situation could "escalate to become a bigger financial crisis than pensions" if the government does not take control of care funding.
