Chef's clean sweep in hygiene awards

It was a case of high fives for head chef Chris Bench after a hygiene inspection gave top marks to catering facilities at both of his Birmingham-based private hospitals. Chris was delighted to receive a 5H rating – the top mark possible - after hygiene experts from Birmingham City Council inspected facilities at both BMI Priory and Edgbaston hospitals. Checks were made on staff training, food safety and handling practises, temperature controls, cleanliness and the condition of food preparation and eating areas.

The inspection was part of Birmingham City Council’s ‘Scores on the Doors’ Hygiene Award Scheme which involves hundreds of food and drink outlets in the region, including cafes, schools, restaurants and hotels.

The inspections are carried out by Environmental Health officers on an annual basis with no notification of a visit given beforehand.

Chris, who joined the hospital’s catering staff as a YTS trainee 26 years ago, said he was delighted that both hospitals received the five star treatment and said it was all down to his ‘fantastic team.’

“I can’t speak highly enough about the energy and enthusiasm and of the people I work with.  They should all feel proud that the two hospitals have both earned top marks.”

Tony Yates, Executive Director at The Priory and Edgbaston, added: “The quality of the food we serve, both to patients and in the hospital restaurants, is a very important part of the service we provide and I am delighted that we have scored so highly.”
