The European Scanning Centre in Harley Street has launched the worlds most advanced scanner the new Aquilion ONE CT 640 slice scanner. The Centre is the only independent healthcare site in the UK and Europe to have invested in this £2 million dynamic volume CT scanner, which uses 320 ultra-high detector rows to image an entire organ in a single gantry rotation.
The Aquilion ONE, which has been heralded throughout the medical world, as a ‘revolution’ in Computed Tomography (CT) technology, dramatically shortens the diagnosis of cardiac and stroke patients to a fraction of the usual time, significantly reduces radiation dosage and offers a safe, non-invasive alternative to conventional cardiac angiography. The European Scanning Centre installation will be used by Toshiba as its European research site.
With the introduction of Toshiba’s Aquilion ONE, medical professionals at the European Scanning Centre are now able to scan an entire organ in one rotation. This ability to carry out a complete examination in just 350 milliseconds eliminates the need to reconstruct data from several points in time, significantly enhancing accuracy and speed of diagnosis whilst reducing the need for invasive tests. Crucially, information about blood flow (arterial and venous) and function of the heart, brain, joints and other parts of the body can now be seen in ‘real-time’.
The ESC will be the UK’s only reference site for the Aquilion ONE on behalf of Toshiba, an indication of the esteem in which the Centre is held. This also means that the ESC will be the first site in the UK to benefit from enhancements to the Aquilion ONE. The team are looking forward to welcoming medical professionals from across the UK and Europe who are keen to learn more about the scanner and see it in action.
