A new suite entirely dedicated to the care of oncology patients has recently opened at Spire Leeds Hospital. The £173,000 investment offers cancer patients the option of receiving a broad range of treatment, all under one roof. Situated on the ground floor of the hospital, the specialist oncology suite has been designed to provide privacy and comfort to patients. Complete with a consulting room, an area for relatives and a waiting room, the suite has five individual patient treatment areas which can be segregated depending on whether patients want to share their treatment experience with others or wish to remain private. A team of seven consultant oncologists are supported by five specialist oncology nurses to provide one-to-one nursing for patients with many different types of cancer. Within the hospital, patients also have ready access to the latest diagnostic equipment and an extensive team of specialists, including consultant surgeons, physicians, haematologists, radiologists, pathologists and physiotherapists, providing a comprehensive pathway of care. Dr Timothy Perren, Consultant Oncologist at Spire Leeds Hospital explains: “Continued advances in technology and a wider choice of drugs mean that we are now able to provide better treatment options for cancer patients. The new oncology suite at Spire Leeds Hospital provides a great environment for patients and is particularly beneficial to those who need a course of treatment over several months. It affords better privacy and enables us to offer high standards of care in state-of-the-art facilities.” Angela Nota, 44, from Leeds was one of the first patients to receive care at the new oncology suite. Originally diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago, Angela began a course of chemotherapy last year after discovering that it had spread to her liver and brain. Angela comments: “Under Dr Perren’s supervision, I began taking chemotherapy drugs last June and I visit the oncology suite at Spire Leeds Hospital every two weeks for blood tests and assessments. The suite is bright and modern, set in beautiful surroundings and the care I receive is excellent. As I am often undergoing similar treatment to the other patients there, it is good to be able to share our experiences and offer each other support.”
