The Sinclair Method: an effective way to reduce alcohol consumption

Are you worried about your alcohol consumption?

Do your friends or family say you drink too much?

Do you reach for a glass of wine at the end of a busy day but end up drinking the bottle?

Do you feel you need to cut down but don’t know where to start?

At GP Care Now, they could have the solution.

The Sinclair Method of alcohol reduction uses a combination of CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and a medication called Naltrexone and has proved to be extremely effective at reducing alcohol consumption in patients who drink too much.

How does it work?

Naltrexone: is an opioid antagonist. When taken before drinking, it blocks the pleasurable effects of alcohol by interfering with the brain's reward system.

The Process: The patient takes the medication before drinking alcohol. Over time, the brain starts to associate alcohol consumption with fewer positive effects, which reduces the urge to drink. This process is known as "extinction" because the brain "unlearns" the association between drinking and reward.

Gradual Reduction in Drinking: Unlike some other methods that aim to quit drinking cold turkey, the Sinclair Method focuses on reducing alcohol consumption over time rather than requiring complete abstinence.

CBT support and counselling: The medication is prescribed by one of the GP Care Now doctors who will see you regularly for counselling and support. This has shown to be beneficial in maintaining a better relationship with alcohol and overall reducing alcohol consumption.

The goal is for the person to eventually lose the compulsion to drink excessively without needing to stay abstinent all the time. The method emphasises individual control over drinking while helping reduce the harmful effects of heavy drinking.
