Three new hospitals for BMI Healthcare

General Healthcare Group (GHG), the UK’s largest independent provider of private healthcare, whose primary business is BMI Healthcare, has acquired three hospitals from Abbey Hospitals. The hospitals in the north-west of England and in Scotland will be run as part of BMI Healthcare's network of more than 70 hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout the country.

The hospitals, located in Liverpool, Gisburn, and Stirling, provide specialties including plastic and cosmetic surgery, bariatric surgery, gynaecology, urology, orthopaedic surgery, general surgery and physiotherapy. The hospitals also undertake a range of contracts for a number of NHS Trusts and PCTs.

Each of these hospitals, with their existing staff and consultants, will continue to provide high standards of treatment and care. Consultant doctors and their patients will benefit from BMI Healthcare’s commitment to investing in facilities, medical technology and the progression of clinical best practice to meet each patient’s individual needs and deliver quality care.

General Healthcare Group CEO Adrian Fawcett said: “We are delighted to welcome the hospitals to BMI Healthcare. Staff and consultants working in each of these hospitals have established reputations and strong links with their local communities and we are confident that we can continue to provide consistent high quality care to people in these areas whilst growing and strengtheningour leading position in the independent healthcare market.”

Ian Thomson, Divisional Director at Abbey Hospitals, said: “We are very pleased to be joining the country’s leading hospital group, BMI Healthcare. The purchase will provide significantly enhanced corporate support to Abbey Hospitals, enabling us to play an even greater role in delivering healthcare to the people that we have already served successfully for many years.”

A fourth hospital, located in Ayr, will continue to be managed within GHG whilst potential new ownership is sought. This follows the decision of the OFT that moving to BMI operating both that hospital and BMI's flagship Scottish hospital in Glasgow might potentially lead to a reduction in overall competition for private medical services in north Ayrshire.
