An Olympic role for Tower hamlets Doctor

BMI The London Independent Hospital’s Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Amer Khan has been selected by The London Organising Committee to provide specialist treatment to athletes and officials at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. During the games Mr Khan will be part of a multidisciplinary medical team and will be based at the stadium in the Olympic Park.

Mr Khan, who will spend the summer on call dealing with injuries during the world’s biggest sporting eventcommented, “It is a fantastic honour to be part of a team of individuals who have been selected for this position during the games, when the eyes of the world will be on London. Having been selected for my expertise and experience I am confident that should something happen we will be able to respond quickly and put into practice our years of rigorous medical training. The Olympics and Paralympics are an exciting time for everyone involved in them and I feel honoured to play even such a small part in them. I wish the athletes all the best for their preparations and hope that they have a safe games. But, should the worst happen, they can rest assured, LOCOG have assembled the finest experts to be on hand and deliver the highest standards of medical care.”

Mr Khan was educated in London and qualified from Kings College Medical School in 1994. He is dual fellowship trained having expertise in shoulder surgery, from The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, and knee surgery, from Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital. He has also completed fellowships in Europe and America with leading knee and shoulder surgeons.

In 2010 he was awarded the British Orthopaedic Association European Travelling and in was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Homerton University Hospital, the official Olympic Hospital for injured athletes. In his orthopaedic practice, Mr Khan specialises in all problems of the shoulder and knee and has particular expertise in modern surgical keyhole techniques for multi-ligament knee surgery, meniscal preservation and replacement surgery, soft tissue shoulder surgery as well as total knee and total shoulder replacement.  As a trauma surgeon Mr Khan also treats a wide range of fractures and soft tissue injuries of the limbs.
