Surgeons replace oesophagus with stomach

A BBC 2 documentary, 'Surgeons: At the Edge of Life', sees AnnMarie opting for an oesophagectomy after an accident where she drank bleach as a toddler. This incident meant that AnnMarie had to visit hospitals countless times a year. A risky operation, there is a 30% chance of experiencing post-operative complications. Ewen Griffiths, leading Consultant Upper Gastro-Intestinal Surgeon, will be carrying out the procedure. With many years of experience, Mr Griffiths will remove the oesophagus and replace it with the stomach in an eight hour and three stage procedure.
