Representatives from the Environmental Health Officer dropped in to carry out rigorous checks of kitchen and restaurant facilities at BMI St Edmunds Hospital in St Mary’s Square. The hospital’s entire catering facilities were given a clean bill of health after checks on staff training, food safety and handling practises, temperature controls, cleanliness and the condition of food preparation and eating areas were carried out.
The inspection was part of St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s ‘Scores on the Doors’ food safety scheme which involves almost 500 food and drink outlets in the region, including cafes, schools, restaurants and hotels.
Hospital Executive Director Peter Lord said he was delighted with the five star award and said it reflected the attitude showed by everyone at BMI St Edmunds.
“Meals here always taste great and our food is regularly praised by patients and visitors alike. But it is also important that people can be sure that the food is prepared in clean kitchens by staff who put hygiene at the top of their priorities.
“The fact that inspectors simply turn up unannounced makes this award extra special because it shows our food preparation areas are in first class condition 100 per cent of the time,” said Mr Lord.
Hotel Services Manager Trevor Banthorpe and chefs Carol Donaldson and Paul Pilmer all hold CIEH Level 4 Advanced Food Hygiene Certificates and played a pivotal role in maintaining the hospital’s five star award for the second time running.
