Trigger point therapy is a massage technique used by Liverpool Sports Clinic, that is used widely by therapists as a manual therapy technique and treatment option to restore muscle functioning, fix spasm, activate muscles how they should, relax overreacting musculature.
Trigger points are tight nodules within taut bands in muscles which cause and create a pain when compressed and can give off a pattern of pain which may refer.
The issue with muscle knots is that every muscle in the body has trigger point patterns which means in every muscle there are certain areas that are susceptible and commonplace for knots to develop. The most common sites for trigger points to occur are the neck, shoulders, back, and hips, but pain may be felt in the extremities as a result of these knots.
Trigger points if serious enough can be referred to as myofascial pain syndrome, this term is given to these types of regional pain conditions which better describes the composite effect trigger points have on the entire locomotor system.
Another issue with trigger points is that they can have an effect on both active and passive range of motion and also resistant to stretching. When an individual performs movements, a therapist can notice and see when there is something abnormal or not normal giving therapists an area to look at deeper.
Trigger points become more irritable and sensitive when an individual’s workload, repetitiveness and over usage of muscles is performed. If trigger points are not treated or looked at then negative effects can start effecting the body. Knots will get tighter affecting overall daily health and living, posture, comfort levels, furthermore, untreated trigger points can lead to migraine syndromes, more sever radiating pain, soft tissue damage or muscular atrophy, bladder incontinence just to name a few negative effects.
Once trigger points are loosened they will release built up toxins that are collected in and around the affected muscles. It’s important to stay hydrated after each therapy to excrete the built up toxins in the body.
Additionally, it is important to take necessary measures to prevent trigger points recurring by implementing daily stretching, exercises, postural correction techniques and employing aids into daily living to prevent a constant strain ion musculature.
