Private clinic treats recurrent miscarriage

Women who have a history of miscarriage may benefit from visiting a new clinic at Spire Harpenden Hospital.

The private clinic, run by obstetrician and gynaecologist Rami Atalla, aims to help the one in five women who experience a miscarriage and has a higher success rate than other units.

Mr Atalla, who has been treating local women since 2000, commented: "At the clinic, our mothers are investigated thoroughly for the cause of miscarriage, therefore in only a very small proportion we might not find a cause."

The expert explained that in the vast majority of miscarriages, the foetus fails to grow as a result of abnormalities in the womb or the presence of antibodies, and this can usually be treated.

"One of the reasons for our high success rate may also lie in the fact that we scan women much more frequently than other clinics, enabling us to gain more information from these investigations and introduce effective lines of treatment much earlier in the pregnancy," he revealed.

Mr Atalla also noted that many clinics delay medicating until after seven weeks, by which time some women will have already lost their baby.

"When a woman is monitored frequently, however, it is possible to begin medication as soon as she falls pregnant," he added.

The clinic is held every Tuesday at Spire Harpenden Hospital.
